08/11/2009: What is Give Galveston a Hand?
What is this about? Why is this important? Two incredibly important questions. First, “Give Galveston A Hand’ is our networking and team building community initiative. It is a way for the Texas Credit Union League and credit union marketing and business development conference attendees to GIVE BACK to a community hit so hard by Hurricane Ike in September 2008.
In the true spirit of the credit union movement and our passion of helping people and community, we will focus our efforts on November 4th for approx. 4 hours to rebuild and restore sand dunes along the beaches of Galveston Island. How cool is that?
Sand dune restoration is vital to the future of Galveston Island in that the sand dunes provide and promote a healthy shoreline by storing beach sand that replenishes the offshore sediment supply, which eventually re-nourishes beaches. Perhaps the most important ecosystem service of dunes is their ability to diminish the intensity of storm surges by absorbing energy, thus protecting homes, businesses and estuaries that lie behind them. Finally, sand dunes provide an invaluable habitat for animals, which use it as a refuge from the harsh environment of the beach and feed on vegetation or other animals.
So, why “Give Galveston A Hand?” Because it is good for Galveston and a great way to spend time together with your peers to make a difference!

What if I'm not attending the conference, but want to volunteer? I am a credit union employee and would love to help. Is that okay? If so, how do we sign up?

Voluteers for our "Give Galveston A Hand" sand dune restoration are key, and YES, are welcome to participate as a credit union employee though not attending the full conference. One must sign up in advance and information on how to do so will be available soon. Thank you for the question and excitement being generated by GGAH!!! We're going to ROCK Galveston!

What are the physical requirements for this event?
Posted by: Alaine LaBauve | 09/28/2009 at 08:33 AM
Alaine, thank you for your post and question. Volunteers will be planting 1 gallon grasses and flowers into the prairie to help revegetate with native plants. The work should be fairly easy, as we are digging in sand. We will form groups of 3 with one person digging, one person planting, and one person watering (switch out as needed). Since it is physical in nature, people with back or other related problems may not want to participate. A waiver will need to be completed for all volunteers choosing to participate. I am so excited about this oppoortunity to help Galveston and look forward to making our mark in the sand!
